Brussels, 03.06.1993 (Agence Europe) - Adelaide Aglietta, Chairman of the Greens Group of the European Parliament, reacted very strongly to remarks made by European Commissioner Joao de Deus Pinheiro before the EP Committee on Rules of Procedure concerning the implementation of the Maastricht Treaty with regard to the Parliament's new powers. Mr. Pinheiro, she says, "obviously does not believe that it is worth agreeing with the European Parliament ... who cares about commissions of inquiry! Who cares about the mediator! Who gives a fig about the European Parliament's role of legislative initiative! That more or less sums up what Mr. Piheiro is saying". Mrs. Aglietta therefore announces that, once she has the transcript of the Commissioner's speech in hand, "we shall see, if we have the possibility, what the Court, and public opinion, thinks of these declarations". (We recall that these questions will be discussed at the Interinstitutional Conference next week).
