Statement by sir Michael Marshall dl mp, president of the inter parliamentary council of the ipu, and mr Max Madden mp, on their visit to Belgrade, monday 21 june

Following meetings on 21 june with the president of the inter parliamentary yugoslav group, and president of the chamber of republics of the federal assembly, dr. Milos Radulovic and with a delegation of the serbian renewal movement, led by mr Milan Komnenic mp, president of the executive board of the serbian renewal movement and member of the interparliamentary council, Sir Michael Marshall dl mp and Mr Max Madden mp, made the following statement.

We were pleased to receive assurances from the president of the yugoslav interparliamentary group, Dr Radulovic, that the proposal for a visit by an international human rights parliamentary delegation of the ipu to yugoslavia was agreed in principle. The agenda for the work of such a mission, which would seek similar facilities in croatia and slovenia, would be the subject of further discussion at the ipu's next statutory conference in Canberra in september: but among the likely items for inclusion would be the rights of ethnic minorities, women and children and parliamentary immunity.

In addition, in our role as members of parliament in the House of Commons, we were able to convey to Mr Radulovic the deep concern of our parliament at the events of 1/2 june in Belgrade, and the current state of the health of mr and Mrs Draskovic. Our request for a visit to see them was refused on the grounds that such visits were allowed only by members of the family and their lawyers. However, through the good offices of Dr Radulovic, were able to call on Professor dr Vaso Antunovic, director of the neurosurgical institute of the university hospital, where Mr Draskovic is now being treated. We were pleased to learn from Professor Antunovic that Mr Draskovic's condition was 'stable' and had improved since his admission to the hospital last friday, and was no longer considered life threatening. We were also reassured by Professor Antunovic's clear statement that Mr Draskovic would not be required to face further court procedures until he was considered fully recovered by his doctors. Professor Antunovic was

not able to comment on the condition of Mrs Draskovic, who is not in his charge. We wish to express our gratitude to Professor Antunovic for agreeing to see us at such short notice.
