December 93: trial of war crimes

Press release

The Radical Party launches International Days for the TRIBUNAL ON THE CRIMES IN THE FORMER YUGOSLAVIA: SATURDAY 18 AND SUNDAY 19 SEPTEMBER

"In order not to forget the tragedies and not to turn back on a decision which has already been taken," Radical Party Secretary Emma Bonino said today, "large-scale international mobilization is necessary."

For this reason the Radical Party has decided to declare Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September International Days for the tribunal on the crimes in the former Yugoslavia, with a series of initiatives to increase public awareness around the world on the proceedings of the next session of the UN General Assembly.

"We must shift our attention beyond the current political scandals in Italy," continued Emma Bonino. "As support for the appeal to the UN promoted by the Radical Party continues to arrive, Bosnia has no longer been front-page news in the last few days. Other news items from Italy and from around the world have taken precedence, and threaten to make people forget the tragedy in Bosnia."

"On 21 September the General Assembly of the UN will meet, and there is a risk, due to the lack of political will, that the decision taken in Resolution 827 of the Security Council to set up an ad hoc tribunal for the crimes in the former Yugoslavia will be ignored and forgotten. The obstacles to the creation of such a tribunal, from the appointment of the Prosecution Attorney to the question of financing, threaten to prevent the decision from being implemented. It is necessary not only to bring the crimes committed in the former Yugoslavia back onto the front pages, but also to make sure that they do not go unpunished. For this reason the Radical Party has decided to declare Saturday 18 and Sunday 19 September International Days for the Tribunal on the crimes in the former Yugoslavia."

Meanwhile support for the appeal for the creation of the UN Tribunal on the crimes in the former Yugoslavia continues to arrive. And support is also starting to arrive from around the world. First of all from Marek Edelmann, survivor of the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto, doctor and member of Solidarnosc, from the Croatian author Predrag Matvejevic, the French writer Alain Elkann, and Italian novelist Claudio Magris.
