- GROWING ADHESIONS AND PARLIAMENTARY
INITIATIVES IN MANY COUNTRIES
A LARGE NUMBER OF ADHESIONS HAVE COME ESPECIALLY FROM
PARLIAMENTARIANS OF THE REPUBLICS OF THE FORMER USSR, FROM THE
PARLIAMENTS OF CENTRAL EUROPE AND LATIN AMERICA.
ADEM DEMACI, SAKHAROV PRIZE FOR PEACE, AND PRESIDENT RUGOVA FROM
KOSOVO HAVE SENT THEIR ENDORSEMENT.
The appeal for the immediate constitution of a Tribunal for the crimes committed in former Yugoslavia is meeting with growing support. In the meanwhile, a parliamentary initiative is also being organized in many countries, including extra-European ones. The text of the petition is a means of parliamentary initiative to pressure governments to make all efforts in their countries and at the U.N. to obtain the institution of the international court of justice for ex Yugoslavia by December 1993.
On endorsing the initiative, the vice president of the Latin-American Parliament and Argentinian M.P. Eduardo VARELA CID announced his objective of obtaining 100 more adhesions among the highest authorities of his country.
Among the first signatories: thirty deputies from Georgia, some forty Bulgarian MPs, over thirty deputies from Moldavia, a number of Ukrainian MPs (including the president of the movement for national independence CHORNOVIL), some parliamentarians and mayors from Croatia, over forty MPs from Albania, 22 deputies from Kosovo, over 10 members of the European Parliament, some Polish MPs, some members of the US Congress of Canada and Italian MPs members of various parties.
The 3,000 signatories include personalities such as:
Nobel prize winners: Julius AXELROD (Medicine '70), Herbert HAUPTMAN (Chemistry '85), Sidney ALTMAN (Chemistry '89). So far there are 8 Nobel Prize winners among the first signatories.
Also: Fernando SAVATER, writer and editorialist with "El Pais", Albanian writer Ismail KADARE', Bosnian director Abdulah SIDRAN, member of the international at the Venice film festival.
Adem DEMACI, president of the committee for the defense of Rights and Liberties in Kosovo, Sakharov prize for Peace, and the President of Kosovo, Ibrahim RUGOVA.
The vice president of the Croatian Parliament, Zarko Doljman, the mayor of Osjek, Zlatko Kramaric, the mayor of Sebenico, Ante Supuk and the vice mayor Sime Vikario have also endorsed the initiative.
