UKRAINE: UNITED NATIONS SYMPOSIUM ON SECURITY, DISARMAMENT AND CONFIDENCE-BUILDING IN THE C.I.S. CONTEXT

(Kiev, September 27, 1993) - The Symposium on Security, Disarmament and Confidence-Building sponsored by United Nations Office in Ukraine, has begun today in the congress hall of Rus Hotel. Radical delegation invited by the organizers takes also part in the symposium.

The stand to collect signatures under the International Appeal to the U.N. for the immediate setting up the Tribunal ad hoc to judge war crimes committed in ex-Yugoslavia was opened in the foyer of the congress hall. Following personalities have signed today the appeal to the U.N.:

Dmitro PAVLYCHKO, writer, Ukrainian MP, chairman of the foreign affairs commission of the Ukrainian parliament; Vladimir ZOLOTOREV, president of Ukrainian Constitutional Democratic Party; Iurie LEANCA, head of the CSCE department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Moldova; Vasyl DURDYNETS, prime deputy chairman of Ukrainian parliament; Boris PATON, president of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; E. AFONIN, scientific secretary of the Insitute of Sociology, Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Vladimir LJASKALO, correspondent of Russian TV-1 in Kiev; Dr. Philip EVERTS, director of Institute for International Studies, University of Leiden, Netherlands; Lieutenant Colonel Grigore ALEXANDRESCU, scientist of the Institute For History and Military Theory, Bucharest; prof. Andrew CATEN, social reasearcher from Minnesota State University; Natalja PREOBRAZHENSKAJA, biologist, one of the leaders of Ukrainian envirinmentalist movement, member of presidency of Ukrainian Peace Council.

Mr. Wernfried KOEFFLER, Austrian federal minister for foreign affairs, has told, that although as a member of government he can not sign such sort of petitions, he is completely agree with the sence of the appeal to U.N. about immediate setting up the war crimes tribunal. He has underlined also that Austrian government's position is in favour of immediate constitution of the tribunal ad hoc on ex-Yugoslavia.
