CAMPAIGN IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC - report from 30th September 93

In Prague, the evening of September 29th brought a demonstration organized by the Tolerance Foundation and the Transnational Radical Party. According to today's Lidove noviny, approximately 200 people were present. Speakers included spokesmen for the organizers (Jan Jarab for TRP, Vera Roubalova for TF), exiles from ex-Yugoslavia (Igor Blazevic, Raymond Rehnicer), representatives of Helsinki Citizens Assembly and Amnesty International, and some respected individuals. TV channel CT 1 reported the demonstration. Later in the evening, it also brought a speech by President Havel, who (although he didn't participate in the demo) also spoke eloquently about the "message" of Munich, i.e. the fact that appeasement of violence can only lead to more violence, and that it is impossible to buy your own peace by sacrificing someone else.

During the demonstration, 126 of the participants signed the appeal for the international tribunal. Among these, some highly respected individuals should be mentioned:

Josef VAVROUSEK, leading Czech environmentalist, Federal Minister of Environment from 1990 to 1992;

Josef SARKA, one of the leaders of the student protests against Nazis in 1939; fifty years later, his speech on November 17, 1989 ("In the spirit of Gandhi we shall march!") started the student demonstration which signaled the beginning of the revolution;

Ivan Martin JIROUS - "MAGOR", poet, leading personality of the 70's and 80's counterculture, leader of the legendary band Plastic People of the Universe, political prisoner for 5 years;

Vlado MILUNIC, Prague's most famous and provocative contemporary architect;

Milan GELNAR, owner of ARGO Publishers, perhaps the most promising publishing house in the Czech Republic;

Vera ROUBALOVA, former spokeswoman for Charter 77, human rights activist;

Dana NEMCOVA, one of the most prominent Chartist dissidents of the 70's and 80's;

Tana FISCHEROVA, actress.

Today there is a press conference at the Radical Party office, and on Tuesday 5th October there will be a radio session about Bosnia on North Moravian Radio with J.Jarab and R.Rehnicer.

The campaign for signatures will continue.

On October 2nd we plan to participate on another demonstration with the Anarchist Union and the Tolerance Foundation. This demonstration will be directed against organized violence in the Czech Republic as it is performed by private security agencies and ultra-right wing groups, who are often connected to these agencies. Two weeks ago, a 19-year old student was brutally killed by a member of such an agency, and last week racist skinheads killed 2 people in separate violent incidents. It has been officially revealed that there are 3500 (!!) private security agencies, i.e. small private armies, in the Czech Republic, and that many of their members have committed serious crimes, but none have lost a license so far (due to an absence of a law which would regulate these businesses, anyone could simply come and ask for a license). Many of the people who work in these agencies are actually former Secret Police and Special Police people who were thrown out of service after the revolution and are, of course, superbly

qualified for violent practices. Due to public outrage, the Government has promised to introduce a "tough" law controlling these agencies. It remains to be seen, however, whether it will actually be so tough as they promise.

Jan Jarab, Olga Cechurova, Petr Horak
