ANTI-MILITARISM: MOVEMENT FOR MILITARY REFORM IS LAUNCHED ON THE MEETING IN MOSCOW UNIVERSITY WITH PARTICIPATION OF EGOR GAJDAR AND OTHER LEADERS OF R.D.C., AS WELL AS LEADERSHIP OF RUSSIAN COMMITTEE OF SOLDIERS MOTHERS' AND A.R.A.

(Moscow, May 24, 1995) - The meeting of different organizations and personalities involved in anti-militarist struggle in Russia took place today in Moscow University. It was organized under aegis of "Russia's Democratic Choice" (R.D.C.) party and gathered about 100 participants.

Sergej Jushenkov, chairman of defence committee of the State Duma told about different aspects of needed military reform. Egor Gajdar, chairman of "Russia's Choice" parliamentary group and president of R.D.C. party told, that passing the recent amendments to the acting law on military service (the amendment in particular establish 2 years of service instead of 1,5 and remove many legal reasons for getting one's draft postponed) is "the biggest defeat of Russian democracy".

As for the really democratic conscientious objection law, many speakers told that it could be passed only if after political elections the majority in Duma will belong to the democratic forces (experts of R.D.C. have prepared already a draft law, much more corresponding to the human rights and demands of demilitarization, that one debated now in Duma).

A political motion was passed unanimously, where is Russian society was called "to unite efforts in order to remove the recently adopted amendments to the law on military service". It was decided also to create an organizing committee of the Movement For Military Reform. Leaders of R.D.C. (MPs Egor Gajdar, Sergej Jushenkov, Nikolaj Vorontsov, senator Jurij Chernichenko, etc.) as well as those of A.R.A. and Russian Committee of Soldiers' Mothers (Nikolaj Khramov, Valentina Melnikova, Anzhelika Chechina and others).
