DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PANCHEN LAMA: NEW ARRESTS IN TIBET. CHINESE MILITARY AUTHORITIES REINFORCE REPRESSION IN TIBET. DECLARATION OF OLIVIER DUPUIS, SECRETARY OF THE RADICAL PARTY.
Brussels, 6th July 1995. "The Chinese police authorities have made three new illegal arrests in Tibet regarding the recognition of the recently disappeared Panchem Lama, very probably kiddnapped by Chinese authorities.
A tibetan monk, Chadrel Rimpoche, his assistant Jin-Lag and a tradesman, Gyara Tsering Sandrup were arrested by the police because they apparently transmitted to the Dalai Lama the results of the choice of reincarnation of the Panchen Lama. The choice was held to be "illegal and invalid" by the Political Consultative Conference of the Chinese People.
In other words we have learned that an strong intensification of police controls has taken palce in the town of Shigatse near the monestary of Tashilumpo, traditional seat of the Panchen Lama, as well as in Lhasa.
All this occurs while the President of the People's Republic of China, Tsiang Tse Min, is undertaking his official visit in Europe, namely in Finnland, Germany and Hungry. All we can do is once again denounce such police opperations which certainly do not help the Chinese President to offer a "new" image of his country in European public opinion.
We equally ask for the releasing of the three Tibetans which have been arrested and that the lessons of reeducation which we thought were buried with the end of the cultural revolution should be finally banished.
