Tibet: press release

FREEDOM FOR TIBET! SARAJEVO, ROME, BRUSSELS, CHISINAU/KISHINEV AND MORE THAN 300 OTHER EUROPEAN CITIES WILL FLY THE TIBETAN FLAG ON THE UPCOMING MARCH 10TH. SIGNIFICANT ADHESIONS ARRIVED ALSO FROM THE USA.

Brussels, February 21st, 1996. Up to now, over 300 mayors and their respective municipalities, from 21 European countries, have joined capitals such as Sarajevo, Rome, Brussels and Chisinau/Kishinev, in adhering to the initiative to hoist the Tibetan flag on their townhalls on the upcoming March 10th, as a sign of real solidarity with Tibet, its people and legitimate government-in-exile, and their fight for freedom.

Our minimum goal has been set in achieving by March 10th the number of at least 500 municipalities adhering to the campaign.

Besides the four above-mentioned capitals, other important cities have recently decided to join the Radical Party initiative. Among them Strasbourg and Toulouse (France); Turin, Bolzano, L'Aquila and Catania (Italy); Malaga (Spain); Maribor (Slovenia); Klagenfurt (Austria); Kaunas (Lithuania); Liverpool and Leeds (UK); Vukovar and Osijek (Croatia); Cracow and Poznan (Poland); Vladimir (Russia); and Hradec Karlove (Czech republic).

From the USA, where the Radical Party has launched a similar campaign, came the adhesion of the city of Berkeley, seat of the well-known university where the civil rights' movement opposing the Vietnam war started in 1964. Moreover, the Governor of the State of Massachusetts solemnly declared March 10th "Tibet day", inviting all the Massachusetts community citizens to remember, on that date, the struggle of the Tibetan people.

The Radical Party, the Tibet Support Groups and the Tibetan communities in exile, are working together on the preparation of two public initiatives of continental dimension, in Brussels for Europe and in Washington, DC, for the Americas. On both sides of the Atlantic ocean, flying the Tibetan national flag, hundred of mayors and thousand of citizens will remember the Lhasa's bloody 1959, calling on governments and national parliaments, as well as the European Union and the United Nations, to start a negotiation for a peaceful and condition-free solution of the Tibetan question.
