ICC/INTERNATIONAL COURT: WE URGENTLY HAVE TO FIX A DATE FOR THE CONVOCATION OF THE DIPLOMATIC CONFERENCE. AN APPEAL OF HUNDREDS OF PARLIAMENTARIANS WAS PRESENTED TO THE UN FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT.

New York-Brussels, August 23rd. Mr Adriaan BOS, President of the U.N. Preparatory Committee for the International Court, met a delegation of the TRP and of the International "No Peace without Justice" committee who presented him an Appeal to the Preparatory Committee signed by 400 deputies from 36 countries.

Marino BUSDACHIN, "No Peace without Justice" secretary presented the initiative to some 80 representatives of member states and to numerous deputies from the ONG coalition for the International Court. Handing over the signatures, Busdachin underlined the importance of the accomplished progresses during the last two years, but he insisted on the necessity and the urge to fix the convocation date of the Diplomatic Conference in 1997 in order to set a definite term to the dilatory manoeuvres.

The President Bos reminded that "after the uncertain start of this second session, the Preparatory Committee is now on the right course, even if it still has to face numerous technico-juridical questions concerning the statute of the court. The pressure should continue as well within the UN as in the capitals of the entire world. In this respect, the task accomplished by the Radical Party and "No Peace without Justice" is an example of information and pressure work with fundamental importance."

From Brussels, the Radical Party's secretary and European Deputy, Olivier DUPUIS, declared: "it is absolutely necessary to arrive by the end of this year to the choice of a date for the convocation of the Institutional Plenipotentiary Conference of the International Permanent Court. With this intend, the Radical Party will launch again next September the campaign for the collection of signatures for the Appeal to Boutros Ghali and to the UN General Assembly, with, as a goal, 1000 adhesions of parliamentarians from at least 50 countries."
