THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT HAS APPROVED THE "FINANCIAL LAW" OF THE E.P. FOR 1997. THE AMENDMENTS ON TIBET APPROVED UNDER THE INITIATIVE OF THE RADICAL DEPUTIES.
Brussels, October 28, 1996. The European Parliament, while approving the tentative 1997 budget for the European Union, has accepted numerous amendments concerning Tibet presented by the MEPs Olivier DUPUIS and Gianfranco DELL'ALBA of the Transnational Radical Party (ARE Group).
The first amendment regards the restoration and increase to Tibetan refugees of the 2.6 million ECU (about 3.2 million USD) allocated to them. A second amendment approves the funding of the promotional campaign, primarily by radio, of information on Tibetans both in exile and still residing in Tibet. A third amendment regards the funding of protection projects and defense of Human Rights in Tibet.
The European Parliament has also specified that the finances designated for Nepal be subordinated to a guarantee of non-expulsion of Tibetan refugees by the Nepalese authorities.
In the end two additional amendments were approve, the first regarding the lines of financing for the non-governmental organizations that operate in Burma for the defense of Human Rights, and the second regarding the co-financing, at an opportune moment, of cooperative actions with the Republic of China (Taiwan).
