Nobel Prize for Wei: press release

DEMOCRACY IN CHINA. CONSIGNED TO THE NOBEL COMMITTEE IN OSLO OVER 1.000 NOMINATIONS OF WEI JINGSHENG FOR NOBEL PEACE PRIZE 1997.

Oslo-New York, January 31, 1997. Mr. Olivier Dupuis, General Secretary of the Transnational Radical Party has consigned 1084 signatures of parliamentarians, University professors, Nobel Peace laureates, members of government in support of Chinese dissident Wei Jingsheng for Nobel Peace 1997. Wei Jingsheng is in bad health conditions after 15 years of imprisonment in the concentration camp of Tangshan.

OLIVIER DUPUIS, GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE TRANSNATIONAL RADICAL PARTY AND MEMBER OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT HAS DECLARED.

"With the consignment of the adhesions collected from all over the world, we end the first phase of a broader campaign, in which we are involved with Human Rights in China, the Federation for Democracy in China and hundreds of citizens. Our campaign wants China to become a democratic country, wants the full enjoyment of human and civil rights there and wants freedom of opinion and expression for 1 billion 200 million Chinese.

Wei Jingsheng is a man that has demonstrated, even in the worst possible condition, his ideas and his hope for a democratic future for his country.

But Wei Jingsheng is also a symbol, the symbol of resistance, of the struggle for freedom and democracy. A symbol for millions of countrymen, but also for the people of Turkenstan, Mongolia and Tibet who resist the implacable colonization of the red Mandarins. A symbol for all those who, all over the world, fight day by day, in the indifference of the media and the public, for a future of democracy, rights and freedom for all the citizens of the world.

We do not doubt that the members of the Nobel Committee will consider that."
