MARCH 9-10, 1997. THE SECOND EUROPEAN DEMONSTRATION FOR THE LIBERTY OF OCCUPIED TIBET AND THE INITIATION OF SINO-TIBETAN NEGOTIATIONS WILL BE HELD IN GENEVA ON THE 38TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE LHASA UPRISING IN TIBET.
THE PROGRAM OF EVENTS
Geneva, Feb. 27th, 1997. On March 9-10, 1997, the second European manifestation for the freedom of occupied Tibet will be held in Geneva.
The event was scheduled by the Tibetan community in Europe, ranging from the Tibet Intergroup to the European Parliament, from the coordinators of the Tibet Support Groups to the Transnational Radical Party.
The manifestation will begin on Sunday, March 9th at 1:00 PM with a series of speeches by important political and cultural figures in front of the United Nations Building in Geneva. At 4:30 PM a non violent march will bring the demonstrators to the lake side for a candle light vigil the will last until 8:00 PM. The marchers will light two thousand candles that represent the colors of the flag of Tibet: red, blue, and yellow.
On Monday morning the demonstrators will return to the United Nations building for a non violent sit-in that will begin at 11:00 AM, during which representatives of the Tibetan government in exile will read a letter written by the Dalai Lama for the demonstrators.
Among those who will speak are:
- Tashi WANGDI, minister of foreign affairs of the Tibetan goverment in exile;
- Emma BONINO, European Human Rights Commissioner;
- James MOORHOUSE, European Deputy and President of the Tibet Intergroup;
- Marco PANNELLA, leader of the Transnational Radical Party;
- Richard GERE, actor and President of the Gere Foundation for Tibet.
