Rome, April 4, 1997
Dear Mr. Mayor,
in thanking you warmly for your adhesion to "A Flag for Tibet" campaign -- an initiative that between 1996 and 1997 has involved over 1,200 mayors around the world -- we would like to remind you that another worldwide mobilization for the strengthening of the Tibetan struggle is still going on.
This campaign, called "A Plaza for Tibet", has as its objective, the naming of a street or a square after Tibet or Tibet-related persons. It is another tangible and durable sign of solidarity with the Tibetan people and their difficult and tragic nonviolent struggle for freedom.
This initiative can also be a way to raise the attention of the public opinion in your city on the Tibetan Issue.
Three city councils have already adhered to the campaign* and many more in Europe are starting the procedures (*).
We hope, Mr. Mayor, that, as you have done in the past, in the next days you will support this initiative for the affirmation of the inviolable human rights of the Tibetan people and their freedom.
Looking forward to hearing soon from you, we wish you all our best.
Good work
