DEMOCRACY FOR CUBA, THE NOBEL PER ELIZARDO SANCHEZ
Elizardo Sanchez Santa-Cruz was born in 1944 in Santiago de Cuba. He was a member of the anti-Batista resistance. A University Professor during the fist years of he Cuban revolution, he was soon denied the right to teach for his dissident ideas. Since then, for his continuous courageous denounces of human rights violations in his country, he has been persecuted with menaces and violence. He was also jailed for more than 10 years for his opinions on the regime. Despite all this he organized support groups for educating conscientious prisoners. He also was one of the most active promoters of a nonviolent and democratic opposition.
With the aggravating of the crisis, and with the risk of a violent implosion of the Cuban regime, Elizardo promoted the so-called "National Reconciliation" - a pacific dialogue process aiming at democracy.
Supporting Elizardo Sanchez means supporting both the urge for a change in Cuba and the importance of achieving it through a nonviolent dialogue. It also means expressing a tangible solidarity to thousands of conscientious prisoners jailed in Cuba.
