The Nobel 1998 for WEI and WANG: letter to the 1997 supporters

Brussels-New York, October 24, 1997

Dear Madam, dear Sir,

We address ourselves to you, in order to thank you for having supported the candidate Wei Jingsheng for the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize, with the hope that the Nobel Peace Prize may finally be able to reward the courage and activity of those struggling for democracy and human rights in the People's Republic of China.

Last year, over 1000 members of national assemblies and university professors worldwide, including yourself, supported the nomination of Wei Jingsheng, a prisoner of consience who is considered the father of the Chinese democracy movement. In addition, an international campaign collected thousands of signatures urging the release of Wang Dan, a prominent leader of the 1989 pro-democracy movement. For their ideas, integrity and sacrifices, Wei Jingsheng and Wang Dan have become symbols for two generations of peaceful pro-democracy activists in China. Awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to these courageous men would mean international recognition of the ongoing struggle for human rights and democracy in China.

As you know, only members of national assemblies, governments, or university professors of law, political science, history or philosophy, are able to support a campaign for the nomination of the Nobel Peace Prize.

If, as we hope, you would once again like to add your personal support to this initiative, please fill out the following form and mail it to one of the addresses below and we will forward it for you to the Nobel Committee.

Please circulate this appeal among your colleagues. The deadline for nominating candidates is the end of January 1998, so your immediate attention to this matter is crucial.

Yours faithfully,

Xiao Qiang Olivier Dupuis

Executif Director General Secretary

Human Rights in China Transnational Radical Party

Member of the European Parliament
