THE PARLIAMENT OF GEORGIA ABOLISHES THE DEATH PENALTY
ONE MORE STEP TOWARDS THE UNIVERSAL MORATORIUM ON CAPITAL EXECUTIONS
DECLARATION OF OLIVIER DUPUIS, MEMBER OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND GENERAL SECRETARY OF TRANSNATIONAL RADICAL PARTY
Strasbourg/Brussels, 20 November 1997. The Parliament of Georgia has abolished, on 11th November, the death penalty, as it has been invited to do by President Shevarnadze. This decision was adopted almost unanimously (148 votes in favour the abolition, one vote against).
Declaration of Olivier Dupuis, Member of European Parliament (ARE) and General Secretary of the Transnational Radical Party:
"Moreover, (and no doubt, due to this fact) having adopted an institutional system which has to create a model not only for the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, but also for numerous Member States of European Union, by abolishing the death penalty, Georgia shows once more its intention to join the European Union. This fortunate decision reinforce also the front of abolitionist countries and the possibilities to obtain the majority in United Nations in favour of the institution of a universal moratorium of capital executions. The Transnational Radical Party which promotes this campaign namely in the heart of Parliaments of democratic countries, welcomes this decision of Parliament of Georgia and repeats its appeal in order that as many as possible Parliaments engage their governments to join the States which already decided to support the institution of an universal moratorium on the death penalty."
