Rome, February 25, 1998
Dear friend,
As you may already know, 1998 could be the year of two important "radical" successes: the achievement, after years of fighting, of the International Criminal Court and of the universal moratorium on capital executions. Yet, the battle has still not been won. The front of abolitionist countries must be reinforced, as well as the front of the countries willing to create a real International criminal Court: an independent Court and provided with the means necessary to its efficient functioning.
On another front, almost an historical one for radicals, the one of antiprohibitionism on drugs, the agenda of the next months risks being as overcharged as the last few months: the right to cure and to be cured, through a campaign for the opening of centres for controlled distribution of heroin and the strengthening of the battle for therapeutical freedom; re-launch of the campaign for the revision of the International Conventions, with the June debate at the UN; continuation, at the European Parliament, of the battle on the d'Ancona report for the harmonization of european legislation on drugs.
We are not going to elaborate on the current initiatives nor on those still to be conceived, on the fronts of freedom for Tibet and democracy for China, of the international language, of the support to the Algerian authorities, of the rights of afghan women, for the Rule of Law and freedoms in Cuba.
Besides these initiatives, we have also started a process, probably the most difficult, of statutory and organizational revitalization that should enable us to celebrate our congress by nest autumn. An ambitious programm, with close deadlines, which will only have some chance of succeeding if we can multiply three fold the memberships of last year, that is to say from 4.000 to 12.000 members.
As a first instrument available for all those who want to participate to this enterprise, we have produced a brochure (available in french, english and italian) that could, hopefully, help you in order to convince also your friends and acquaintances to become shareholders of the Transnational and cross-party Radical Party in 1998.
We hope to be able to realize, together with you, a considerable part of this programme,
Best regards,
Olivier Dupuis Danilo Quinto
(Secretary, MEP) (Treasurer)
