AFGHANISTAN/UN COMMISSION OH HUMAN RIGHTS IN GENEVA: RADICAL PARTY STATEMENT ON THE PROGRAMMES OF THE UN.
IF ARLACCHI'S PROJECT SHOULD START, IT WOULD GO AGAINST THE UN AND ITS POLICY. THE WHOLE CREDIBILITY OF THE UNITED NATIONS COULD BE UNDERMINED.
Geneva-New York, April 10, 1998. The Transnational Radical Party has delivered a statement on agenda item 9, which deals with the programme and method of work of the Commission.
The Radical statement highlighted the contradictions between the almost unanimous position of the UN and its Member States on the serious violations of human rights perpetrated by the Talibans in Afghanistan, and the project on crop eradication that UNDCP is willing to carry out in conjunction with them.
"It is not only that the UNDCP project to finance crop eradication is an unrealistic initiative per se, it is not only the legitimization of a regime that has been recognized only by three countries, it is the whole credibility of the United Nations in itself that is at stake here."
While the United Nations is quite clear about Talibans, the UNDCP, a UN executive body, goes against the whole Organization. The credibility of the UNO passes through the rigor and homogeneity of its policies, UNDCP project - which is also questioned by many scientists and experts - can seriously hinder the role, the credibility and the strength of the UN itself."
