SPENCER'S AFFAIR: FULL SOLIDARITY

Declaration of Olivier Dupuis and Gianfranco Dell'Alba, members of the European Radical Alliance

Brussels, february 2, 1999. "Once again we have witnessed a slander campaign against a political figure, based on the dissemination of information concerning his private life and clearly aiming to damaging and destroying him.

As for the modest quantity of drugs found in his possession - which is "de facto" decriminalized in the majority of the EU countries - it just makes us regret not having been able to count on the support of an MP of the value of Mr. Spencer for the struggle that we have been leading for a number of years, also at the European Parliament, against prohibitionist policies and the tragedies they imply such as, today, Mr. Spencer's.

We want to honour his work and to express our full solidarity to our colleague Tom Spencer, to the Chairman of the European Parliament Foreign Affairs Committee who undoubtedly has the merit to have succeeded in livening it up and of having strengthened its role, its authority as well as its prestige".
