EP/Kosovo: press release

KOSOVO/INTERNATIONAL TRIBUNAL: THE EP ASKS THE MEMBER STATES TO HAND OVER ALL THE EVIDENCES IN THEIR POSSESION ON THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THOSE WHO COMMANDED THE CRIMES "REGARDLESS THE INSTITUTIONAL FUNCTIONS THEY FULFIL".

Strasbourg - Brussels, 12 February, 1999. In the resolution on Kosovo adopted yesterday, the European Parliament "invites the Member States to hand over to the International Criminal Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia all the evidences necessary to identify the direct personal responsibilities of those who commanded the war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Kosovo regardless the institutional functions they fulfil".

Declaration of Olivier Dupuis, Secretary General of the Transnational Radical Party and Member of European Parliament:

"While the Council of the European Union continues to consider the maintenance of the regime ruling in Belgrade, and thus of Mr. Milosevic, as a central element for the stability of the region and the solution of the Kosovo question, the European Parliament strongly underlines the central role of this regime in the tragedy of the Former Yugoslavia and the neccessity to put the Tribunal in the conditions to verify the direct responsibility of the main leaders of the Belgrade regime in the crimes committed yesterday in Bosnia and Croatia and today in Kosovo. In the increasingly sceptical climate as regards the posibility to re-establish a minimum of justice in Kosovo situation, this means, undoubtedly and finally, a step in good direction, which cannot otherwise, but bring us nearer to the moment of the indictment of Mr. Milosevic".
