Mr. Prime Minister,
Despite the difficult economic and social situation and despite the serious regional context, your Government is taking decisive steps towards the enhancement of democracy and the rule of law, for the normalization and the reinforcement of the relations with the neighbouring countries and for the inter-ethnic cohabitation. In the same way, you and your Government have clearly and firmly demonstrated the intention and the will to pursue, without hesitation, the process of European integration.
Either because of their short-sightedness or because of cheap calculations, the authorities of the European Union have succeeded in convincing the authorities of your Country of the false and dangerous principle that the tabling of a formal request of accession by Macedonia to the European Union is conditional on the previous conclusion of the cooperation and association agreements.
On the one hand, this attitude frustrates the legitimate aspirations of the citizens of Macedonia to seeing both recognition of their full European identity and consolidation of their hope to security and to development inside the institutional, economic and political context of the European Union. On the other hand it fully fails to appreciate the political value that such a request would certainly receive both by the european public opinion and by many of its representatives.
For these reasons, Mr Prime Minister, we invite you to table as soon as possible a formal request of accession of the Republic of Macedonia to the European Union.
We assure you that, just as during the difficult days of the independence of Macedonia, you, your Government and your Country can count on our friendship and on our commitment to support the request to become, as soon as possible, full member of the European Union.
