APPEAL TO THE KOSOVAR GOVERNMENT TO MAKE THE DEMILITARISATION OF UCK AS ITS PRIORITY

DECLARATION OF OLIVIER DUPUIS, SECRETARY OF THE RADICAL PARTY AND MEMBER OF EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT:

Rome, 19 June, 1999. "The recognition of the Kosovo's provisional Government of Hashim Thaci by the Macedonian Government of Prime Minister Georgievski constitutes undoubtedly a highly important act not only for the reconstruction of a climate of civil coexistence among all the populations of the whole Balkan region, but also for re-launching a new and pragmatic approach of the Government of Republic of Macedonia to the question of coexistence between the Macedonian majority and Albanian minority. An approach which had been subjected to serious proof by the initial attitude of the Macedonian authorities to the arrival of expelled Kosovars and whose possible today's re-launch owns a lot to the great sense of responsibility demonstrated by Arben Xhaferi's Democratic Party of Albanians of Macedonia.

This second recognition of the provisional Government of Kosovo, after the recognition by the Government in Tirana, has now to be followed rapidly by similar recognition by the Governments of the international community, beginning with the ones of European Union, together with a rapid demilitarisation of UCK, the indispensable condition to settle the process of on-going pacification and to create a climate of full civil coexistence and the conditions for a rapid reconstruction of Kosovo."
