EP/Sakharov Prize: press release EP SAKHAROV PRIZE 2000: MORE THAN 100 DEPUTIES SUPPORT THE NOMINATION OF TIBETAN NGAWANG SANGDROL Brussels, 15 September 2000. More than 100 MEPs from all parliamentary groups have already supported the initiative of their colleagues Mr. Olivier DUPUIS (Radical), Mr. Thomas MANN (EPP), and Mr. Reinhold MESSNER (Greens) to nominate Ngawang SANGDROL of Tibet for the 2000 Sakharov Prize of the European Parliament. Ngawang Sangdrol, 24, eight years spent in jail, was imprisoned for the first time at the age of 13, when she participated in a demonstration for the freedom of her people. Because she did not to accept to do the kind of self-criticism imposed by the Chinese prison authorities on dissidents, and for having tired to smuggle out of her prison an audiotape in which, with her cellmates, she recorded songs of hope for a free Tibet, she was sentenced another three years. She will not be freed before the year of 2013. It is for her courage and her determination that she
was also awarded a Prize by the Tibetan Youth Congress in exile. The choice of the winner of the 2000 Prize, which amount is 50,000 Euro, will take place on 26 October, while a solemn ceremony will take place on 13 December, in Strasbourg.
