Excerpt from Hong Kong newspaper 'Ming Pao' "Consolidated report" by staff reporter en filled: "The Dalai Lama says riots might take place in Tibet should Beijing disregard international pressure
China has expressed strong discontent over further meetings between the visiting exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama and the US top hierarchy, urging the United States to take the overall situation of its relations with China into account and not to arrange such meetings. On the other hand, the Dalai has warned China that violent events might take place should it disregard international pressure.
In response to this reporter's questions, a spokesman for the Chinese Foreign Ministry said yesterday that China is opposed to meetings of US national leaders and other officials with the Dalai. The Chinese government's stand on this issue is consistent and firm. He urged the United States to take the overall situation of relations between the two countries into account and not to arrange such meetings. Commenting on the Dalai, who is to testify before the US Congress during his visit, the spokesman said that China is not opposed to the Dalai's action of giving testimony in itself. However, it would raise objections should the contents of his testimony involve splitting Tibet from China. As for meetings between US congressional leaders and the Dalai, he said that China did not have an explicit attitude on such meetings; but it was firmly opposed to officials at all levels in the US executive branch, or more specifically the US government, meeting with the Dalai.
