Two Chithus visit Madison Tibetan Community (HRW) (source WTN)

Representatives Karma Choephel and Namkha Tenzin arrived today, September 30th, by Greyhound bus from Chicago. The Chithus came to the United States from Dharamsala, India as part of a government legislative exchange program, and are meeting with Tibetan communities in the United States.

A large number of Tibetans in Madison gathered on Saturday morning to attend a meeting with the two Chithus who are visiting the Tibetans to drum-up support and solidarity for active participation in various coming Tibetan events. These events are to be held in New York City in connection with the 50th anniversary of the United Nations in order to increase awarness of the following demands for U.N. support of the Tibetan situation:

l. The U.N. should recognize that Tibet is an occupied country, illegally colonized by China through aggression in 1949 in contravention of international law.

2. The U.N. should mediate between Tibet's true representative - His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-exile as recognized by the Tibetan people, and government of the People's Republic of China for negotiations regarding the future status of Tibet. And/or initiate the conduct of an internationally supervised plebiscite of all the Tibetan peoples both in and outside Tibet to determine their future.

3. The U.N. should accord forthwith Observer Status to His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the sole representative of the Tibetan people.

4. The U.N. should invite His Holiness the Dalai Lama to address the on-going session of the General Assembly as Nobel laureate and a leader of international standing in the fields of World Peace, Disarmament, Religious Amity and the protection of Environment and Ecology.

5. The U.N. should recall and implement the three resolutions already passed by its General Assembly on Tibet namely -

Resolution 1353 (XIV), 1959

Resolution 1723 (XVI), 1961

Resolution 2079 (XX), 1965

Those present at the meeting in Madison today collected a large sum of money for the cause and even one Tibetan volunteered to join others in a hunger strike. In October, a contingent of Tibetans from Madison will join other Tibetans throughout the country in New York City in a desperate attempt to appeal to the U.N. for a quick and fair solution for Tibet.

The meeting with the two Chithus was well attended and everyone felt a renewed sense of urgency and determination for the Tibetan situation. The meeting concluded with a pot-luch luncheon. Following this, the two Chithus left bus for Minnesotta to meet the Tibetans there.
