SIX TIBETANS ON HUNGER STRIKE UNTIL DEATH IN NEW YORK CITY (source WTN)

NEW YORK, October 13, 1995

Six Tibetans, including a woman will go on a Hunger Strike Until Death from 9.00 A.M. (Eastern Time) on October 14, 1995 in front of the united Nations Headquarters for the acceptance of a five point Charter of Demands.

For the last 25 days, Tibetans in the United States, mainly from N.Y. and N.J. have been sitting on an indefinite relay hunger strike in front of the U.N. to press for the same demands. The vigil was started on September 19th. A memorandum was sent to the Secretary General of the U.N. and its copies were dispatched to the permanent missions and embassies of all member nations but no response was forthcoming. The memorandum was not even acknowledged by the U.N. ecretariat.

Now, in order to increase the pressure on the U.N. and gain the support of the member nations, concerned organizations and individuals the world over, these Tibetans have decided to sacrifice their precious lives for the sake of Tibet's independence from Communist China.

A second letter of appeal is being sent to the Secretary General and copies endorsed as before. The organizers will also address a second letter to the President of the United States, the Chairman of the U.S. Senate, the Speaker of the,U.S. House of Representatives, Majority and Minority leaders of both the Houses, Congressmen who are known supporters of the Tibetan issue and three former Presidents.

On the morning of the same day, Tibetans from all over the United States and Canada will hold a peaceful, silent march from 31st Street 3rd Avenue Manhattan to the U.N. headquarters building in order to mark the special occasion. The march will conclude with a prayer meeting at Dag Hammerskjoeld Plaza on 47th Street & First Avenue where the volunteers will be honored. They will release a joint statement to the media and will also be available for interviews
