Maffezzoli Giulietta - 13 ottobre 1995
STATEMENT FROM THE HUNGER STRIKERS AT THE UN IN NEW YORK - OCTOBER 13, 1995 (source WTN)

We, the undersigned Six Tibetans now residing in the United States of America-the great land of Freedom, Justice, Equality and Democracy - have decided to sit on a hunger strike until death from the morning of October 14, 1995 onwards till our demands are met by the United Nations. We would like to categorically state that we decided to make this sacrifice in full and complete sense of all our faculties and without force or compulsions whatsoever from any quarter. We also have, in the heart of our hearts, the greatest devotion and unqualified faith in the leadership of His Holiness The Dalai Lama. We particularly salute our courageous brothers and sisters in Tibet who have never given in to the Chinese inspite of great repression and hardships.

The just struggle of the valiant people of Tibet to be free and independent from the most oppressive rule of Communist China has been going on for nearly four decades. During all these years, the Tibetan people, in accordance with their deep-rooted religious belief, and the values enshrined in their ancient culture, chose the difficult path of peace and non-violence as a means. The United Nations and through it the governments and leaders of the member countries that form the bulk of the globe, paid little attention to our struggle.

Time is now running out for Tibet. With the Chinese Communist regime going all out to completely annihilate the very identity of the Tibetan people from the face of the earth, we cannot remain passive spectators. It is high time that the Tibetans either DO or DIE. We are therefore appealing to the United Nations to salvage Tibet by accepting the demands as follows:

1. The U.N. should recognize that Tibet is an occupied country, illegally colonized by China through aggression in 1949 in contravention of International Law.

2. The U.N. should mediate between Tibet's true representatives - His Holiness the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile as recognized by the Tibetan people, and the government of the People's Republic of China for negotiations regarding the future status of Tibet. And/or initiate the conduct of an internationally supervised plebiscite of all the Tibetan peoples both in and outside Tibet to determine their future.

3. The U.N. should accord forthwith Observer Status to His Holiness the Dalai Lama in the General Assembly as the sole representative of the Tibetan people.

4. The U.N. should invite His Holiness the Dalai Lama to address the on-going session of the General Assembly as Nobel Laureate and a leader of international standing in the fields of world Peace, Disarmament, Religious Amity and the protection of Environment and Ecology.

5. The U.N. should recall and implement the three resolutions already passed by its General Assembly on Tibet namely - Resolution 1353 (XIV) 1959 - Resolution 1723 (XVI) 1961 - Resolution 2079 (XX) 1965

Until the five demands are accepted in full, we have resolved to sit on hunger strike till we breathe our last. If the demands are accepted, it will be the victory of good over evil - of Freedom, Justice and Truth; of Civilization, Decency and Good Conscience. If we die, we shall have no regrets for it is a sacrifice worth making and our brethren shall continue the struggle.

We thank the government and the people of the United States for the opportunity of living here and doing something useful for our people. We are also grateful that the National Democratic Party of Tibet has taken the initiative to foster the Tibetan struggle at an opportune moment.

Lastly, the Tibetan people should not lose hope. We shall over come !

LONG LIVE HIS HOLINESS THE DALAI LAMA !
