HUNGER STRIKE UPDATE GIVE TIBET A VOICE AT THE U.N.!!!! (Source WTN)

Today is the fifth day of the six Tibetans' Hunger Strike Until Death on the door step of the United Nations. Two doctors visited the site this morning; they examined the hunger strikers and took blood tests. No major problems were reported. Monday seems to have been the most difficult day for the six Tibetans - today they were quite alert, talking with the many supporters who were there with them.

The tempo has picked up dramatically in the last 24 hours. As the hunger strike continues in New York, the National Democratic Party of Tibet is organizing simultaneous demonstrations and press conferences in New Delhi. Numerous representatives from the media visited the site at 47th Street and First Avenue to interview the hunger strikers today. CBS Television was there, in addition to crews from Finnish and Belgian stations. Reporters from several newspapers have picked up the story, including the New York Times and the Village Voice.

As the time of the U.N.'s celebrations draws nearer, more and more people are arriving in New York. The number of visitors to the site is rapidly increasing, and there appears to be a great deal of understanding of the Tibetan situation and support for the hunger strikers and the Tibetan cause. Several passers-by have expressed their support but stated that one individual can do little to help. Supporters of the hunger strike stressed the power of the individual and the small group, speaking of the importance of writing letters to the editor and to U.N. and government officials. People can sit for token hunger strikes or hold vigils wherever they are. "Perhaps this will provide the spark that leads to Tibetan independence" said Namkha Tenzin.
