TIBETANS STAGE HUNGER STRIKE AT UN CELEBRATION (Source WTN)
NEW YORK, Oct 20 (Reuter) - Several Tibetans on hunger strike for almost a week gathered outside the United Nations on Friday, asking that it mark its 50th anniversary by recognising Tibet as an occupied country.

"At the U.N. they're going to have a party and they're saying 'We did very good to the world,"' said one hunger striker, Tenzin Jamyang, 24. "They don't see Tibet. They don't listen, they don't care. To make them care, I am doing this."

He and five others began the hunger strike on Oct. 14, across the street from the United Nations. The protesters, all wearing blue knit caps, pray in the mornings and then spend most of the day sleeping. They rest on cushions under banners and a portrait of the Dalai Lama, the Buddhist leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner.

The protesters want the United Nations to mediate between China and the Dalai Lama, invite the Dalai Lama to address the General Assembly and give him observer status.

The Dalai Lama and many other Buddhists fled Tibet in 1959 after a revolt that was suppressed. Tibet became an autonomous region under Chinese rule in 1965.
