The Telegraph Agency of the Soviet UnionNew York, October 22 (TASS) - "UNO, WAKE UP AT ONCE FREEDOM TO TIBET", this call was chanted by more than two hundred demonstrators, who gathered before the sky-scraping worldfinancial centre, in whose winter garden lobby the New York mayor was giving a gala dinner on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the United Nations Organisation.
The function was attended by more than fifty heads of state and government, who arrived here to attend the special jubilee meeting of the United Nations General Assembly, devoted to the 50th anniversary of this international organisation. Present also was a big number of prominent public and political leaders, including ex-secretary of state Henry Kissinger, who was master of ceremonies, and U. N. Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. "
"New York and the United Nations have much in common," Ghali said in his speech. "They speak much in New York. People in the United Nations also like to speak. Nevertheless, much is being done both in New York and in the United Nations," he noted.
"This city and our international organisation have one more common feature," Ghali stressed. "It is that New York is the world's financial and economic capital, while the United Nations is the capital of world diplomacy. "The U. N. Secretary-General noted that merged in New York were people from almost all the states that are members of the United Nations Organisation.
Many warm and kind words were said during the function about the United Nations. Kissinger, for instance, pointed out that at the time when the United Nations was being set up fifty years ago, the world was on the threshold of the "cold war", was heading towards the period of east-west confrontation. Today, he said, the situation has changed cardinally, and the Soviet Union's collapse has put an end to the confrontation of the two super-powers, but, nevertheless, the world community is currently faced with new tasks in new regions of the world, and the United Nations is making a substantial contribution to their solution.
However, the demonstrators, who gathered before the world financial centre on that very cold, rainy and windy evening, insisted that the United Nations should not neglect its day-to-day work even during the jubilee celebrations. The demonstration for Tibet's Freedom was only one of the several manifestations held here on that day. Most of the Saturday actions were linked with Fidel Castro's arrival in New York. It is noteworthy that even Castro's daughter, now living in the United States, has announced her intention to join the anti-Castro's demonstrators during the jubilee days.
