UNITED NATIONS, Oct 25, 1995; (AFP) - A senior United Nations official said Wednesday that six Tibetan hunger strikers demonstrating across the street from UN headquarters would not be allowed to die.
UN Undersecretary General Gillian Sorensen, speaking at a forum on human rights, said the health of the Tibetans - now in their 12th day of hunger strike - was being carefully monitored by New York City medical personnel.
"They will certainly not be allowed to die," she said. "They are being carefully watched and assisted to the extent possible."
New York City police forcibly took one of the strikers, the only woman among the group, to the hospital on Tuesd ay, a spokesman for the Tibetans said.
"She was very weak, but now we have another woman taking her place," he said. "We will continue our fast until death."
The hunger-strikers are trying to call UN attention to the plight of Tibet, which China took over in the 1950s.
