DANES PLAN TIBET HEARING DESPITE CHINESE PROTEST (Source WTN)

COPENHAGEN, Nov 9 (Reuter) - Danish parliamentarians said on Thursday they would go ahead with plans to hold a hearing in Copenhagen on human rights in Tibet despite Chinese threats.

"I had not expected threats from the Chinese embassy, such attempts at censorship are unacceptable," said Joergen Estrup, chairman of the Danish parliament's foreign affairs committee, which aims to hold the hearing early next year.

"As long as there is consensus among parliamentarians to stage the Tibet hearing, it will take place," he said.

On Wednesday the Chinese Embassy in Copenhagen issued a statement attacking plans to hold the hearing as unacceptable Danish interference in Chinese domestic affairs.

"The Danish parliamentary committee's decision to hold a so-called Tibet hearing represents gross meddling in China's domestic affairs. It will damage relations between Denmark and China," it said.

"China hopes that the Danish parliament will give precedence to co-operation with China and cease interfering in internal Chinese business," the embassy concluded.

Danish industry has voiced concern at the planned hearing and its possible detrimemtal effect on Danish exports to China, valued at just over one billion crowns ($200 million).

The hearing is to be attended by representatives of all Danish political parties and open for Chinese attendance, with an invitation going to Tibet's exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, Estrup said.

Beijing maintains Tibet has been an integral part of its territory since ancient times, regularly accusing the exiled god-king Dalai Lama of trying to split China and foment an independence movement in the region since he fled into exile after an abortive uprising in 1959.
