NEW DELHI, Nov 16 (Reuter) - Tibetan youths protested in the Indian capital on Thursday against the visit of the Qiao Shi, chairman of the National People's Congress of China.
"The Tibetan people in the exile community express their frustration and resentment towards the visit of Qiao Shi," a joint statement issued by the Tibetan Youth Congress and Tibetan Women's association said.
Young Tibetans wearing headbands demanding a free Tibet joined hands to form a human chain and blocked traffic at a busy junction in South Delhi. They were later chased away by police.
The youths plan to hold further demonstrations elsewhere. Shi, a high ranking official in the Chinese political hierachy, is on an official visit to India "to increase mutual understanding and cooperation" between the two countries, government officials said.
"Any negotiations between India and China at the cost of the Tibetans can never be accepted and tolerated by the Tibetans," the Tibetan exiles' statement said.
Tibet's spiritual leader Dalai Lama and some 100,000 Tibetan refugees have been living in India since 1959 when the Chinese crushed their pro-independence uprising.
