CANADIAN INITIATIVES RE PANCHEN LAMA

MONTREAL: December 4, 1995 (CTC) -- It has been helpful hearing about the activities of Tibet Support Groups around the world in support of the Panchen Lama. The Canada Tibet Committee National Office (Montreal), has launched the following initiatives:

1. Canadian Parliamentarians are signing a joint letter to be sent to the Chinese Embassy in Ottawa, and the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade (DFAIT).

2. A question will be raised in the House of Commons this week, asking what actions the Government of Canada has taken to determine the whereabouts and safety of the Panchen Lama.

3. Canadian representatives of the Tibetan Women's Delegation to the Beijing Conference, have written to their contacts in the Canadian Embassy, Beijing, requesting its assistance in locating the Panchen Lama.

4. Two Canada Tibet Committee Representatives, President Thubten Samdup and UN Working Group member Tenzin Jimpa, will meet with officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, December 6, to discuss immediate bilateral intervention and related strategy at the 52nd Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights.

5. Canada Tibet Committee members will join the Tibetan Cultural Association of Quebec in a demonstration on December 10, International Human Rights Day.
