The Tibetan community, in the San Francisco Bay area, and Tibet supporters did a candlelight vigil in front of the Chinese Consulate in San Francisco on Sunday, December 10, 1995 from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. to protest China's violations of fundamental freedoms and human rights in Tibet; its detention of the 6-year-old Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the Eleventh Panchen Lama; and its imposition of a false Eleventh Panchen Lama chosen by the atheist communist regime, a blatant infringement on the freedom of religion. The vigil was organized by Tibetan Association of Northern California.
