CHINA CONDEMNS U.S. FOR WEI CASE INTERFERENCE
Published by World Tibet Network News - Friday, December 15, 1995

BEIJING, Dec 14 (Reuter) - China expressed its utmost indignation and strongly condemned the United States on Thursday for what it called interference in China's domestic affairs over the jailing of dissident Wei Jingsheng for subversion.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Chen Jian, addressing a regular news briefing, demanded that the United States government immediately stop interfering in Chinese internal affairs.

Wei, widely regarded as the father of China's modern democracy movement, was convicted on Wednesday of conspiring to subvert the government and imprisoned for 14 years, although he was spared a possible death sentence.

The United States responded by condemning China for jailing Wei and urged Beijing authorities to show clemency.

Wei disappeared into China's security apparatus in April 1994 soon after meeting a senior U.S. human rights official. He was formally charged with sedition last month but did not appear in public before his trial on Wednesday.

After his sentencing, China said Wei's outspoken criticisms of the one-party communist system, his advocacy of Tibetan independence and his efforts to raise funds to promote his beliefs were an attempt to "stir up a storm sufficient to shake the current political power."
