Over a dozen Tibetan and Tibet supporters held a candle-light vigil before
the Chinese embassy in the heart of Washington, D.C. on December 10, 1995
which is World Human Rights Day. The gathering braved the cold icy
weather, dubbed by the weatherman as one of the coldest days of the
season, reciting Tibetan Buddhist prayers.
The gathering carried placards calling for the release of the Panchen Lama
and respect for human rights in Tibet. Several motorists who passed by the
vigil site sounded horns in support. The vigil concluded with the singing
of the Tibetan national anthem.
Although December 10 was a Sunday and the Chinese embassy was closed, some
embassy personnel were seen peeping through the windows toward the vigil
site even as they carried on what appeared to be a game of billiard.
The vigil was organized by the International Campaign for Tibet.
