A new musical about the early life of His Holiness Tenzin Gyatso and the Chinese invasion of Tibet. The purpose of this play is to promote positive action on behalf of Tibet, as well as to educate and entertain.
We have worked hard to make the play accessible to a broad, popular audience, mixing Western dance and music with Tibetan influences, as well as creating a spectacular, multi-media production. Our aim is to make the play popular without compromising too much on the seriousness of the content, so that production of the play might be considered by many groups around the U.S.
The premiere production of the play is currently being staged at Hillsdale College, a small, independent, liberal arts college in Michigan. This first production is being done on a small, workshop scale, but it should tell us if the play is good enough to consider producing elsewhere.
Our eventual hope is to form a non-profit production company to produce this play on a large, perhaps touring, basis. If this can be done, it will accomplish several things, all of which will benefit the struggle of the Tibetan people.
1. Big shows can be big generators of money. Beyond paying for performers and production costs, any such money could be channelled to the various Tibetan Relief foundations.
2. Such a production would provide work for Tibetan performers, dancers and musicians who are currently living in the U.S.
3. Such a production would provide a ready vehicle for cultural exchange with Tibetan performers, dancers and musicians currently living and working in other parts of the world.
4. A big, touring production of this show would do a very great deal to raise the consiousness of the U.S. general population in regard to Tibetan issues.
PLEASE THINK ABOUT JOINING US FOR THE PREMIERE OF THIS NEW MUSICAL!
The very small window of opportunity to see and judge the first production will be, February 15, 16, 17 and 18 at the Sage Center for the Arts, Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, MI 49242. I will be more than pleased to hold complimentary tickets for you and any guests you might care to bring.
