Xinhua news agency reports that Tibet will add four new airline routes from Lhasa in 1996. Tibet's Gongga airport will increase its daily capacity to ten flights, while airlines will add flights from Lhasa to Changdu in eastern Tibet, and to Shanghai, Kunming, and Xian in China. Planes already fly to Chengdu and Chongqing in neighboring Sichuan province, to Beijing, and to Kathmandu in Nepal. Southwest Airlines plans to add a second weekly flight to Beijing. After renovations, the airport will accommodate larger Boeing 767 aircraft.
