Last month's Tibet News Digest reported on a new film, Kundun, to be produced next year on the early life of the Dalai Lama. Kundun (The Presence) is an honorific title often used by Tibetans for their god king, signifying the holiest presence in the land. Other titles used by Tibetans are Gyalwa Rinpoche (The Precious Victor) and Yishin Norbu (The Work Fulfilling Jewel). The Mongolian title Dalai (Ocean) was conferred in 1578 and was practically unknown in Tibet before the Chinese invasion of 1950.
