Excerpts from report by Xinhua news agency

Yunnan's Lijiang, 8th February: At 1914 [Yunnan local time] on 3rd February the earth suddenly shook in Naxi Autonomous County in Lijiang Prefecture in northwestern Yunnan, all the lights went out, then there was yellow smoke, and all sorts of loud noises. People realized with trepidation that it was an earthquake...

On behalf of the party Central Committee and the State Council, Vice-Premier Wu Bangguo arrived in Lijiang to convey regards to the earthquake-stricken people. He spoke highly of the party members and cadres who had played an exemplary vanguard role in sharing weal and woe with the people in rescue work.

Thirty-two-year-old Communist Party member He Guihua, captain of the county public security bureau's criminal police, dashed into a civilian house immediately after the earthquake struck and rescued two children from a collapsing house in quick succession. However, a beam fell on him and he sacrificed his young life. In Anle Village, Huangshan Township, nine village cadres, disregarding their own injured family members and the damaged property in their collapsed homes, immediately transferred all the elderly and children in the village to an apple orchard. Then they separately led a militia rescue team to remove heaps of rubble in collapsed homes that night. They dug out seven dead bodies and rescued about 40 injured people. Their superiors praised them as "strong bastions in the earthquake" .

Jiang Chunyun

Jiang Chunyun, State Council vice-premier and member of the Political Bureau of the CCP Central Committee, sent a congratulatory letter to the China Society for the Breeding and Development of Ostriches, Xinhua news agency reported. State Councillor Chen Junsheng and officials attended the society's inauguration ceremony on 6th February.

Vice-Premier Jiang Chunyun and other central leaders have contacted the blizzard-ravaged Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai, to enquire about disaster conditions.
