Re: Conference Update
Date: February 22, 1996
The conference is now only 2 weeks away!
We have had a great response so far, and we are particularly encouraged to see so many new people coming to the conference. It seems that we will have a very heavy student turnout for the conference which is sure to bring new ideas and actions to the movement.
We would like to request everyone who is coming to pre-register!
Especially for those who plan to stay for the lobby day must pre-register for the conference by FAX or mail by February 28. We need this advance notice to arrange individual meetings with your congressional representatives. We also plan to include in each registration packet a list of names and addresses of partipcants to facilitate staying in touch after the conference. Only those pre-registered can be included.
The conference is being held at the Marriott Hotel, 775 12th St., NW, in downtown Washington. The Marriott hotel is conveniently located one block from Metro Center, the subway station where the red, blue and orange lines intersect. The conference proceedings, the reception, dinner and Tibetan meeting will all be held at this location.
We would again like to take this opportunity to urge you to participate in the conference. The registration fee is $45 per person which includes the reception and dinner on Saturday evening with guest speaker Harry Wu.
A final program of conference events with detailed descriptions of panels and workshops will be distributed at registration on Saturday, March 9, starting at 8:45 A.M.
We would also like to request you to bring along any Tibetan flags, placards and banners that you may have. These would be very useful during the rally on March 10th.
LODGING: We have arranged for discounted rooms at two nearby hotels - the Carlyle Suites and the Quality Hotel. When you make reservations, let them know that you are with International Campaign for Tibet, to receive the discounted rate. (Rooms are also available at the Marriott (202-737-2200) for about $190, but we have no discount.)
* The Carlyle Suites is offering a special price of $80 per room (Single, double & triple) for conference participants. The suites are quite spacious and contain small kitchens. Please call (202) 234-3200 for reservations.
* The Quality Hotel Downtown is offering a special price of $65 per single room and $75 per double room. The rooms are also spacious and have kitchenettes. For reservations, please call (202) 232-8000. Both these hotels are near the Dupont Circle Metro stop on the red line.
There are a few tables available for selling books and merchandise. We ask that groups pay $50.00 for a table to help us to cover our costs. Tables are limited and will be given on a first-come-first-serve basis. There will be some space available for distribution of free material.
Enclosed in this package is a March 10th demonstration flyer, registration form and ICT brochure. Also enclosed is a press release about a Tibetan fulbright student who is feared to be in detention in Tibet. We hope to have a slide presentation about him at the conference.
We look forward to seeing you !! Please call us at 202-785-1515 if you have any questions. You can also e-mail us at ict@peacenet.org.
