EU COMMISSIONER TO JOIN TIBETAN PROTEST MARCH
Published by World Tibet Network News - Sunday March 10th 1996

BRUSSELS, March 8 (Reuter) - European Humanitarian Aid Commissioner Emma Bonino is set to join a demonstration in Brussels on Sunday to mark the 37th anniversary of Tibet's national uprising against an invasion by China.

Some 87,000 Tibetans were killed in the invasion and Tibet's spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, his government and around 100,000 people fled into exile.

"Bonino will take part in a personal capacity," said Bonino's spokesman Filippo di Robilant.

Bonino, an Italian radical, has campaigned for Tibetan independence for the past 15 years and is expected to wear a long Tibetan white silk scarf of friendship and wave the national flag.

Another Commission spokesman said European Commission President Jacques Santer and External Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan were both out of town and unable to receive Samdhong Rinpoche, President of Tibet's Parliament in exile.

Rinpoche will lead an expected 4,000 supporters from all over Europe in a march from the Chinese embassy to the European Parliament, according to a Tibetan nationalist statement.

Several hundred European towns are expected to fly the Tibetan national flag over their town halls as a sign of solidarity, added the statement from the Dalai Lama's representative in Paris.

The march is organised by the European Parliament's all-party group on Tibet, the transnational Radical party and the European Tibet Support Association.
