PLAY ABOUT TIBET
Published by World Tibet Network News - Thursday, March 21, 1996

From: elinor@arcos.org

Mahakala.Iron Dreams, presented by Base Camp Theatre in association with Phyzikal Theatre, opens Saturday, April 6 at 8:00 p.m. and runs Tuesday through Saturday with a Sunday 2:30 pay-what-you-can matinee.

The theatre, The Wellington Space, is located at 7 Stewart Street (one block south of King St. and a just east of Bathurst.

Mahakala.Iron Dreams follows Delia, a young Canadian dancer, and her sister, Shannon, into Tibet where, within an hour, they stumble upon two Tibetan women singing a song in the street. The police appear, beat and arrest the women and drag them off. A curious response to the singing of a quiet little song. Delia has a few questions...

The play was written by Diane Cartwright and is directed by Philip Shepherd of Phyzikal Theatre. Live music is an integral part of the performance with Debbie Danbrook playing Shakuhachi flute and Jim Good on percussion.

Mahakala.Iron Dreams was a finalist out of 104 full-length scripts submitted to the Canadian National Scriptwriting Competition in 1995. In September 1993, after long consultation with members of Chushi Gangdruk, it was performed in a workshop at the Tarrgon Theatre Extra Space at which time three Tibetan performers joined the cast of ten actors. One Tibetan performer will be appearing in this production, which, it is hoped, will be mounted again in other cities.

Fund-raising continues and if anyone would care to support the production, a they will receive a tax deductible receipt and our heartfelt gratitude. We have raised the money for sets, lights, publicity, studio and theatre rental ourselves! If the donation is above $130, the donor gets a small, beautifully detailed sculpture of Vajrapani (Chana Dorje) by Martin Sheiner.

For Tickets or Information telephone (416) 703-2773. To make a donation please e-mail: elinor@arcos.org or phone the above number.

Thanks!
