KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- Nepalese police arrested about 100 Tibetans and four Nepalese human rights activists and prevented a planned protest march to the Chinese embassy on Monday, witnesses and police said.

The march was organized by the local unit of the London-based Amnesty International to present a letter to the embassy protesting alleged human rights violations and capital punishment in neighboring China.

Nepal maintains good ties with China, with which it enjoys a flourishing trade.

Nepal is home to about 20,000 Tibetans who fled their homeland after the Chinese army marched into Tibet's capital Lhasa in 1959. About 100,000 Tibetans - including the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists, the Dalai Lama - live in neighboring India.
