A CONCERT FOR A FREE TIBET (IN SAN FRANCISCO)
Published by World Tibet News - 7 April, 1996

The International Committee of Lawyers for Tibet (ICLT) will present "A Concert for a Free Tibet" featuring composer/pianist Philip Glass, Grammy award winning film scorer and trumpeter Mark Isham, six time Grammy nominated Cajun guitarist and singer David Doucet, actor and Master of Ceremonies Peter Coyote (E.T.), renowned flautist Nawang Khechog and the Bay Area's Tibetan performance troupe Chaksam-pa on Saturday, April 27,1996 at 8 pm at the Berkeley Community Theater, 1930 Allston Way, in Berkeley, California.

With the Tibetan Resettlement, the Bay Area has become a center of Tibet support in the US. ICLT plans to make the concert an annual event, the west coast equivalent of the concert at Carnegie Hall.

The concert is being produced for ICLT by the generosity of the people at Bill Graham Presents and sponsored by ATS Products, Seven Summits for a Free Tibet, Meyer Sound Labs, and Ultrasound. Berkeley five star restaurant Chez Panisse will help cater a Gala Preconcert Reception with the performers at 7 pm at the Theatre. Proceeds from the event benefit ICLT, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that advocates self-determination, human rights, and environmental protection for Tibet.

Mr. Samdup asked me to send you a short note about his upcoming lecture.

On Monday, April 8, Kenyon College will host Thubten Samdup, North American Parliamentary Representative of the Tibetan Government-in-exile. Mr. Samdup will speak on "Democracy and the Tibetan Diaspora." We are very pleased that Mr. Samdup has graciously agreed to travel from Canada to Ohio to give this important lecture. Thubten Samdup's lecture inaugurates a "Free Tibet Week" at Kenyon, which will feature a Tibetan dinner, benefit concert, petition drives, guerilla theatre, and a day of fasting in remembrance of the suffering of the Tibetan people.
