On the 14th of May 1995 the Dalai Lama announced his recognition of the boy, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima as the recipient of the spirit of the 10th Panchen Lama who died in January 1989.

This choice had emerged after a state-sanctioned search by senior lamas, and had been expected to have been approved by the Chinese. But this choice enraged the Beijing government. It was soon after the announcement that the newly recognised Panchen Lama, his Family and Chadrel Rinpoche (accused of colluding with the Dalai Lama in his announcement of the Panchen Lama) where placed under detention. A Chinese statement "We have no idea of the whereabouts of the soul boy designated by the Dalai Lama" leaves the Tibetan world in fear for the safety of the six year old Panchen Lama. Who was last seen in July 1995.

It is as a result of the growing fears for the safety of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, after the Chinese announced there choice on the 29th November 1995 of Gyaincain Norbo as the 11th Panchen Lama. That we along with other concerned individuals will be holding a peaceful vigil opposite the Chinese Embassy 49/51 Portland Place, London W1. On Tuesday 14th May 1996 between 4pm and 8pm.
