CHINESE - SHOW SOME BACKBONE, NYRUP
Published by World Tibet News - Thursday, Apr 25, 1996

[Editorial in the largest Danish newspaper, Politiken, Wednesday, April 24, 1996. Translated into English by Anders Andersen]

Gosh, our prime minister is so busy. He would really like to meet the Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama, during his coming visit to Denmark. But unfortunately - the time does not permit.

Anyway, this was what the prime minister said yesterday - the same prime minister that last week tried to present himself as a powerful open-minded chief.

Try once more, prime minister. It is not true that there is no time if there is will.

(...)

Denmark conducts with considerable respect a sort of critical dialogue with the totalitarian regime in China, reasoning that we can not very well do without relations with the large empire in the East. Having an eye to trade interests, Denmark has (therefore) received official Chinese guests in Copenhagen.

So it can not be true that the leader of Denmark's government - referring to time constraints - excuses himself from also meeting the oppressors' victims - in this case the exile head of the suppressed Tibetan nation. Tibet is occupied militarily, culturally and economically. Its leaders have been forced into exile. Its population is in a military vice-like grip. The Dalai Lama has a claim to Danish respect, help and sympathy.

Show some backbone, Nyrup. Take your time.
