The campsecurity guarantees to other countries around the Baltic Sea, said a local newspaper today.
During Prime Minister Goran Persson's one-day visit to Finland on Wednesday, the two countries signed an agreement to enhance security cooperation in the Baltic region, the Svenska Dagbladet reported. But both countries ruled out providing a security umbrella for their smaller neighbors.
The paper said that some NATO members, such as U.S., Germany and Britain, have suggested that if the alliance expands to include only Poland, the five Baltic states outside NATO - Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Sweden and Finland - will have to take care of their own security. In this event, Sweden and Finland should take on greater responsibility for the security of the other three states.
Russia has also proposed that the five Baltic countries form a non-aligned security bloc.
But at their joint press conference on Wednesday, Persson and his Finnish counterpart Paavo Lipponen made it clear that the two countries oppose these ideas.
Persson said the idea that Sweden take special responsibility for the security of its Baltic neighbors was out of the question.
